Which is the best free German bank account? Which bank account should you choose when living in Germany as an expat or foreigner? How to open a bank account in Germany? Online? Offline?
These are the questions that many expats have when they want to open a bank account in Germany. Many expat do not want to pay maintainance Fees on their bank accounts.
There are banks like Commerzbank that is already trusted by over 11 million customers in over 50 countries. With around 800 branches and around 9000 ATMs, we offer our customers in Germany excellent service and optimal customer proximity. But recently Commerzbank changed their policy and one needs to have a minimum of 700€ worth incoming payments to maintain an account without any fees.
For those who want a free Bank account in Germany, I have selected two of my favourite options
1. DKB cash
DKB cash account is a Free bank account in Germany without any account management fees and has many advantages. DKB Cash account has DKB-Visa card with which you can withdraw money from ATMs throughout Germany free of Charge.

2. Comdirect
Comdirect – is the market leader among online brokers in Germany and the leading direct bank for modern investors that provides a Free bank account in Germany. This means that with this account one can easily invest in the Stock market along with having a bank account.
Here are some features of the Comdirect current account
- Two free cards: bank card (Visa debit card) and girocard (debit card)
- Withdraw cash often free of charge at many ATMs worldwide
- Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless payments

Unlike DKB cash, unfortunately some conditions to keep the account free
- The first 6 months after opening an account are free. The current account then remains free of charge with a monthly minimum incoming payment of EUR 700 or 3 payments via Apple Pay or Google Pay per month – with the bank card (Visa debit card) or Visa credit card or 1 trade / 1 securities savings plan execution per month. You also do not pay an account management fee if you are under 28 years of age and are a student, pupil, trainee or intern. If not, there is an account management fee of 4.90 euros per month, provided there is no custody fee.
